Willis Reed, who spent the entirety of his illustrious tenure wearing a Knicks jersey, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80.

Reed, the 1969–70 NBA MVP, was a seven-time All-Star, a five-time All-NBA pick, and a Finals MVP twice with the Knicks (1970, 1973).

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982, Reed was also selected to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021 and the list of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996.

The passing of our cherished Captain, Willis Reed, has been announced by the Knicks organization with great sadness, the club said in a statement. The unmatched leadership, selflessness, and work ethic that typified him as a champion among champions are the standards we will always endeavor to uphold, even as we mourn. His influence will endure eternally. Please respect the family’s privacy during this trying time, we urge everyone.

Reed was a powerful center who had career marks of 18.7 points and 12.9 rebounds. He is perhaps best remembered for his performance in Game 7 of the 1970 championship series against the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite missing Game 6 due to a ruptured thigh muscle, Reed played in and scored in Game 7.

In that series, Reed had a point total of 23.5 and a rebound total of 10.5 per game.

Reed, who was raised in Dubach, Louisiana, ended his career due to injuries after the 1973–74 season.

Before becoming the head coach of the Nets in 1988–89, Reed went on to lead the Knicks in 1977–78, as well as work as an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings.
