Bewitched was hit with not one but two unfortunate deaths during its production. After the show’s fourth season in 1968, Marion Lorne, who played Aunt Clara, died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 84. Curiously enough, Lorne was also posthumously honored with the same Emmy Award Pearce won two years earlier.

She appeared in 27 episodes of Bewitched and was not replaced after she died of a heart attack in her Manhattan apartment on May 9, 1968, aged 84, prior to the start of production of the show’s fifth season. She is interred at Ferncliff Cemetery in Greenburgh, New York.

But ten days before she won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress Award in a Comedy Series for her performance on “Bewitched” on May 9, 1968, Marion suddenly died of a heart attack in her New York apartment at the age of 82.

Life and Unexpected Death of Marion Lorne, the ‘Bewitched’ Aunt Clara. As the mumbling aunt Clara in the 1960s television show “Bewitched,” Marion Lorn never reached lasting success in Hollywood. But it’s not without reason that she would later be called “more than an actress, an institution.”.

Later that year, Marion landed a role in “The Girl Rush” as Aunt Clara. Coincidentally the same character name as her later role in “Bewitched.”. Marion made her first appearance on “Bewitched” in 1964 during the show’s seventh episode and became one of the most beloved characters on the series.

How are Samantha and Aunt Clara related?

Although Aunt Clara was Samantha’s favorite aunt, we never find out exactly how the two are related. Most likely she is related to Endora since in Allergic to Macedonian Dodo Birds, Dr. Bombay states that only a relative could acquire Endora’s powers, but no exact relation (sisters or cousins) is revealed. Similarly, it also is not known how Aunt Hagatha and Aunt Enchantra are related to Samantha or Endora, although some fans insist that they were Endora ‘s sisters as the three prosecuted Clara in The Trial and Error of Aunt Clara. In Endora Moves in for a Spell, Endora says she was an only child until Arthur was born, which would imply Clara is not her sister, since she is older than Endora . Maurice ‘s siblings are never mentioned leaving a possiblity Clara and other aunts of Samantha could be his siblings. There is also however a possiblity that the “Aunt” or “Cousin” title could be used in relation of a family friend, such as Cousin Edgar, who is an elf.

Similarly, it also is not known how Aunt Hagatha and Aunt Enchantra are related to Samantha or Endora, although some fans insist that they were Endora’s sisters as the three prosecuted Clara in The Trial and Error of Aunt Clara.

Instead, in season six, they created the character Esmeralda, played by Alice Ghostley, who could also be a befuddled witch with wobbly magic whose spells often went astray, although unlike Clara, not because of aging. Coincidentally, Lorne and Ghostley played alongside each other in the 1967 film The Graduate as partygoers.

In Endora Moves in for a Spell, Endora says she was an only child until Arthur was born, which would imply Clara is not her sister, since she is older than Endora. Maurice ‘s siblings are never mentioned leaving a possiblity Clara and other aunts of Samantha could be his siblings.

Comedic actress Alice Ghostley was recruited to fill the gap as “Esmeralda”, a different type of older witch with wobbly magic whose spells often went astray. Coincidentally, Lorne and Ghostley had appeared side-by-side as partygoers in the iconic comedy-drama film The Graduate, made the year before Lorne’s death. She received a posthumous Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Bewitched. The award was accepted by Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery .

Between 1958 and 1964, she made regular appearances on The Garry Moore Show (1958–1962). Her last role, as Aunt Clara in Bewitched, brought Lorne her widest fame as a lovable witch who is losing her powers due to old age (and whose spells usually end in disaster).

Lorne debuted on Broadway in 1905; she also acted in London theaters, enjoying a flourishing stage career on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In London she had her own theater, the Whitehall, where she had top billing in plays written by Walter C. Hackett, her husband.

The actor’s death wasn’t addressed immediately on the series, and eventually the character was killed off in a helicopter crash after visiting South America.
