The “Home Alone” house exists in real life and is located in Winnetka, Illinois. It went on the market in 2011 and was sold the following year for $1.5 million. Marissa Hopkins, who was the broker at the time, shared a video of the home taken at the time of the sale with Insider.

At the time of filming, the Abendshien family lived in the Winnetka house. They’d met the film’s location manager when they lived in Evanston. At first, the location manager expressed interest in using their Winnetka home for the Hughes film Uncle Buck, but that didn’t work out. Over a year passed before the Abendshiens were asked to use the house for Home Alone. Of course, they had no idea how popular the house would become. “We would have not believed back then that there would be sightseers coming to look at that house for years afterward,” John Abendshien told Vanity Fair in 2020.

The crew built an outdoor stairway to the basement and a treehouse, both of which were removed when production was over. The new owners may have done renovations to the home since then, but from the outside, it looks the same.

You can, however, see ‘Old Man Marley’s’ house next door (the house to the left). Built in 1920, the red-brick, Georgian-style home sits on a half-acre with around 4,200 square feet of living space. Unfortunately, Colombus didn’t state which rooms were sets and which were real, therefore it’s difficult to know. The kitchen was a major part of the movie, however, the kitchen today looks nothing like the kitchen back then.

If you plan to visit the location, however, keep in mind it’s not an attraction open to the public. So, while you can stop by and grab some selfies with the house from Home Alone, you won’t be able to go inside.
Oh, and the back door down the set of stairs outside – that actually wasn’t real. A backhoe was brought in to dig up that part of the property so that a fake door and steps could be added in. Kevin’s treehouse was also specifically built for the film and ended up being taken down after filming wrapped.
