Authorities claim a man died over the weekend after falling around 200 feet (61 metres) in Oregon while out hiking with his wife and five kids.

The man has been identified as Beaverton, Oregon resident Gerardo Hernandez-Rodriguez, 41, by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office reported that Hernandez-Rodriguez was hiking with his family on a well-liked trail close to Multnomah Falls, the largest waterfall in the state, on Saturday.

About 30 miles (48.28 km) east of Portland, on a switchback not far from the falls and the picturesque Benson Bridge, he stumbled and collapsed.

Sheriff’s deputies and a U.S. Forest Service ranger started searching the region, and they requested a drone from a neighbouring police department to help them navigate the difficult terrain.

Hernandez was discovered by a sheriff’s deputy at the bottom of a cliff close to a highway, directly below the trail where he fell. Hernandez did not survive the fall, according to the sheriff’s office, and authorities think alcohol impairment had a role in it.
