Boyd attended Clairton High School in Clairton, Pennsylvania, and graduated from there as one of the most successful football players in Western Pennsylvania history. With 117 career touchdowns, he set a WPIAL record. With 5,755 yards rushing, he finished as the fifth-leading rusher in WPIAL history. He had a variety of positions for Clairton, which won four WPIAL and four PIAA Class A championships and finished 48-0 in his three seasons as a starter and 63-1 (.984) in his four varsity seasons. He was a running back, wide receiver, quarterback, defensive back, and punt returner. Boyd gained 295 yards receiving on just 13 catches as a senior while also leading the WPIAL in scoring with 51 total touchdowns and 345 points. He also carried for 2,584 yards and 43 touchdowns.
