Snapchat filters allow you to add crazy animations, sounds, images, and more to your face (see the disturbing images of my filtered face below!). There’s an entire catalogue of lenses built by other users that anyone can access.

But lighter skin isn’t the only thing people are noticing when they use Snapchat filters. Some people have also claimed that specific filters make their nose or jawline appear smaller than it is in real life.

Snapchat’s Scary Mask filter puts a horror spin on our modern face mask phenomenon. It’s a fun little option, probably something to use when you’re trying to convince people to wear face masks in public. Extra points for the whited-out eyes. Have you felt like you’ve aged a lot during these last months?

Why does Snapchat lighten my pictures? This particular controversy goes back several years when people first started claiming that some of Snapchat’s “beautifying” filters artificially lightened pictures — and, in particular, lightened people’s skin tone in those pictures.

When did Snapchat acquire Looksery?

Simple explanation. Looksery developed an application that modifies facial features in real-time. Snapchat acquired them in September 2015 for 150 million dollars and used their technology to launch a new feature that we call today, filters. We will talk shortly about why this is a sound investment.

This glitch occurs because the filter is trying hard to find a face and that random object on which the filter is being applied to simply pass the criteria of detecting a face. Though this is one helluva coincidence, there is no way to fix it just yet. Maybe after processing a lot more data, something can happen.

For Snapchat, of course. Using their newly acquired technology, Snapchat is looking to monetize its app even further. They filed for a patent in July 2016 to take image recognition to another level. According to this technology, when a user clicks a picture of a delicious cheesy burger, they trigger special filters.

Face detection is not a new technology. Facebook has had that for a long time. The digital cameras you owned before even using DSLRs also detected a lot of faces. So it’s common knowledge that it’s not rocket science. But the extent to which Snapchat filters find the face might be a little over your digital SLRs league.

Well at least they don’t have to store the images sent everyday. If playback doesn’t begin shortly, try restarting your device.

An updated version of Snapchat had a feature for swapping faces with a friend, whether in real-time or by accessing some faces from your gallery ( yes, you allowed Snapchat to look in your Camera Roll ). Notice how the face shapes are visible; that’s the position where the statistical model lies.

But the extent to which Snapchat filters find the face might be a little over your digital SLRs league. When humans see a face, the brain processes a lot of information that triggers the memory nerves, and you recall whether you know the person or not and react so.

What are the classic Snapchat filters?

The Classic Filter. The classic filters include the smiley face puking rainbows, the sad face with the ocean of tears and the big eyes with the rosy cheeks. If you use these filters, you are probably the type of person who uses Snapchat filters solely to express how you are feeling.

If you’re an avid Snapchat user, you must be familiar with this trick. If you pick a filter, and then hold down your finger on the screen while continuing to swipe through filters , you can achieve what is known as a “combo.” You can combine two filters in one.

So if you use them too much, these morph filters will have people quickly moving on to saucier Snapchat stories.

The time filter – or clock filter – is usually used for one of two reasons. It’s probably really early and you’re out and about, or it’s probably really late and you’re out and about. Either way, you’re awake at an unreasonable hour, and you need the world to know.

Seeing a face swap once or twice in your story is cute. But getting your entire family together for a photo op is nobody’s idea of entertainment. You are sure to see a drastic change in your views quickly.

Bunny ears, facial hair, dog face, shark face, turn you into a hotdog, show you with marijuana, stretch your neck, …

This isn’t supposed to happen because Snapchat touts age-gating, which is supposed to prevent alcohol ads from getting to teens. But, the problem is that Snapchat’s “system” is smart. Too smart.

The difference is subtle – filters are those that lay over a face, while a lens is more akin to what you might think of as augmented reality – changing something like a building or adding a Pokémon to your screen .

News outlets and online forums quickly concluded that this age reference had a pedophilia agenda. Snapchat quickly removed the filter on June 3.

But, the problem is that Snapchat’s “system” is smart. Too smart. The account’s birthday is only one of many things that dictate whether Snapchat displays adult content to a user. If someone with a birthday indicating they’re 25 only has 13-year-old friends, then Snapchat will consider the 25-year-old as a child.

There have never been any substantial parental controls in Snapchat. Filters cannot be turned off. It’s an app that has a long history of placing mature content in front of young people. We’ve published a couple of popular posts the called out particularly egregious content on the app: 5 Days of Snapchat Discover.

What color is the best Snapchat filter?

Some of the best Snapchat filters knock most of the image to black and white, but then add some color elements on top, to give them a strong emphasis. That’s what we’ve got here where you can select one of many neon colored pairs of horns. I picked Pink because they’ve got a nice electric touch.

Want to present a tripped-out front without suggesting you’ve actually done anything illegal? User Zara Shapiro’s Rainbow Glasses filter slaps on a pair of wild shades on your face, with multi-colored lenses of their own that suggest you’re looking to get a little loopier than usual. If you’re able to go to the beach, these would be a strong fit with a swimsuit.

So while the primary demographic using Snapchat may not know what VHS stands for, this decidedly old-fashioned filter has wide appeal to all. Snapchat’s VHS filter not only adds those lines from CRT TVs (again, ask your parents) and it replicates the tearing glitch that could happen during an old fashioned recording.

Snapchat’s filters can be a lot of fun, so we’ve got the best Snapchat filters for you — a face modifier for for every occasion. Yes, while Instagram’s Story posts have become one of the biggest social media platforms, Snapchat has increased its daily active users worldwide from 190 million to 229 million based on doing what it does best.

You’re often putting on a different face on Snapchat, but the app’s Scary Mask filter puts a horror spin on our modern face mask phenomenon. It’s a fun little option, probably something to use when you’re trying to convince people to wear face masks in public. Extra points for the whited-out eyes.

Sailor’s Cap by Snapchat. (Image credit: Future) It’s never too early for Halloween when you’ve got Snapchat. But with this nautical filter, you not only get a beard fit for the sea and an oversized cap, but they also drop a bubble-blowing pipe into your mouth.

Dancing Turkey by Snapchat helps you out by providing the Turkey costume that you don’t feel like renting, unzipping and fitting into. This filter made me laugh out loud, for a bit, during a particularly trying day, so I can seriously recommend it to all Snapchat users out there trying to find levity in a slow day.
