Walter Stanley Keane (October 7, 1915 – December 27, 2000) was an American painter who became renowned in the 1950s for a series of paintings showing fragile waifs with huge eyes that were extensively copied. Susie Keane’s Puppeteens, wide-eyed puppets hand-painted by Walter Keane, clothes created and sewed by Barbara Keane, and named after their daughter Susan Keane, inspired his idea for these paintings in 1948. Margaret Keane, Walter’s previous wife, claimed that Walter’s paintings were really hers. Margaret challenged Keane to a “paint off” in the following Slander suit, but he refused claiming a bad shoulder. Margaret then painted in front of the jury for 53 minutes, and the case was resolved for $4 million in her favour.
