Tributes: Bryan Collins Passes Away, Stony Brook Athletics & Former Seawolves’ Defensive Line Coach

In January 2023, Bryan Collins was promoted to defensive coordinator. Collins, who is beginning his third season on coach Priore’s staff, is in charge of all facets of the Seawolves’ defence. He joined the programme before the 2021 season and served as the defensive line coach for the Seawolves throughout his first two seasons at Stony Brook.

The Long Island coaching veteran spent 23 seasons as the head coach at LIU Post before joining the Stony Brook staff. Collins, who totaled 162 victories and guided LIU Post to six NCAA tournament berths and eight Northeast 10 Conference titles during his tenure as head coach, is the program’s all-time winningest coach.

Collins won the title of Northeast 10 Coach of the Year seven times, first in 1999.

He worked with the Pioneers as their defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 1996 to 1997 before being hired head coach of LIU Post in 1998. Collins also served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy from 1994 to 1996. His first coaching position was as an assistant defensive coach/defensive line at LIU Post from 1991 to 1993.

Collins, a former St. John’s University student-athlete who played linebacker for the Red Storm football team, won the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, which is given to the student-athlete at St. John’s who best exemplifies courage, perseverance, dedication, and a spirit of self-sacrifice in pursuing the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins graduated with a Business Administration bachelor’s degree in 1987.
