T. O. “Tony” GRAHAM (October 29, 1956 – May 2, 2023)
Over the past 45 years, Tony and I have been close friends. He was my tennis coach back in the day. He was a wonderful sport and a lot of fun to be around. We hit it off and began spending time together. He often had his students come to my court to learn.
He and Vitas Gerulaitis, Guillermo Vilas, and Roger Gaon visited the mansion on a memorable occasion. The idea for the game involving Vitas, Guillermo, and I came from Tony.
Of course, it was difficult to play with those people. The pros could only get a point by hitting an easily retrievable ball to me, as per the rules. When Vitas hit a forehand, it was always a little more to my right. He continued shoving me back, and eventually I was unable to reach it. His command was superb. Memories are funny that way.
Tony accompanied me to a few tennis matches. We visited McEnroe’s and Conners’ locker rooms, where he knew everyone there.
With two Grand Slam titles under his belt, Tony also finished third at the U.S. Open and second at Wimbledon. All of these contests took place when he was ranked 88th in the world in the doubles event. His singles ranking was at number 100.
Tony and I have been in constant communication over the past few months. We agreed to meet again for supper the following week and share another tomahawk steak. His Prostate cancer operation was well-known, but I had assumed he was doing well. To all appearances, he was in good spirits. It was just a few days ago that I chatted with him, and now I hear that he has passed away. OMG🥲
Sad news, my pal SLUGGO🇺🇸
