Pakistani military general Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq became the president of Pakistan after he deposed the erstwhile prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and declared martial law in 1977. He subsequently became longest-tenured head of state, reigning from 1978 to 1988. He died in a plane crash in Bahawalpur.
