James S. Holmes was an American-born poet, translatologist, and translator who became the first non-Dutch person to be honored with the best-known Dutch award for achievements in the field of literary translation, the Martinus Nijhoff Translation Prize, in 1956. His best work was his translation of Nijhoff's Awater, which earned praises from Nobel Prize winners, Joseph Brodsky and TS Eliot.
