Virginia revealed on Monday that longtime men’s basketball coach Terry Holland had passed away. Alzheimer’s disease was earlier diagnosed in Holland, 80.

Holland died Sunday night in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to the Cavs.

The Cavaliers released a statement saying, “Virginia athletics mourns the passing of legendary men’s basketball coach, Terry Holland, who first showed us what Virginia basketball could be.”

“Ann, the Holland family, and the complete Virginia basketball family are in our thoughts,” the statement reads.

In total, Holland coached the Cavs for 16 seasons, from 1974 to 1990. With a 326-173 record, he departed as the school’s all-time winningest coach. In addition, he guided the group to three straight ACC regular-season championships and two trips to the Final Four.

He guided the Cavaliers to two trips in the Elite Eight, an ACC tournament victory, and one NIT triumph. He was also the ACC Coach of the Year twice.

In their first 21 seasons in the conference, the Cavaliers had only once produced a winning record in ACC competition prior to Holland’s arrival. But in 10 of his 16 seasons as head coach, UVA finished with an ACC record of.500 or higher. Ralph Sampson, Virginia’s star center, guarded the paint as the Cavaliers went 37-5 in conference play from 1981 to 1983. Tony Bennett surpassed him early this season to become the school’s all-time wins leader.

After the 1989–1990 season, Holland retired from coaching and went into athletic administration. From 1993–1994 he served as Davidson’s athletic director once more.

From 1994 to 2001, he worked at Virginia in the same capacity. His most recent position as AD was at East Carolina from 2004 to 2013.

The wife of a previous Virginia basketball coach goes by the name of Ann. In addition to two grandchildren, Holland and Shark Baynard, and a granddaughter, Eliza-Grey, the pair had two daughters, Ann-Michael and Kate.
