The mother of three children involved in a murder-suicide, one of whom was killed and another shot in Springfield this past August on Berkshire Avenue, was killed in a car crash in the city early Friday morning.
Stephanie Croteau was the woman killed in a crash just after midnight on Oct. 6, MassLive has confirmed.
The fatal crash happened in the area of Parker and Cooley streets at about 12:10 a.m. Friday and involved a single car, according to the Springfield Police Department.
Croteau was the only person in the car, and she died at the scene from her injuries, the department said.
Croteau recently lost her 10-year-old daughter, Aubrianna, and her mother, Kim Fairbanks, 52, to a murder-suicide shooting at 174 Berkshire Ave. on Aug. 14.
Upstairs neighbor Victor Nieves opened fire on Fairbanks and Croteau’s three children, aged 12, 10 and 5, along with the family’s dog. He then turned the gun on himself.
10-year-old Aubrianna was shot in the chest, and Croteau had said her 12-year-old daughter had been trying to protect her siblings, and was shot in the abdomen. Her 5-year-old boy was not injured.
The grandmother and the family’s dog were also killed in the shooting, police said. Officials had found the frightened, blood-soaked children hiding in a bedroom.
In the days following with Aubrianna still hospitalized, many on Facebook posted prayers and waited for more news.
