The family of a woman who was struck by a rollercoaster at the Melbourne Royal Show say they are “appalled” that the ride has been deemed safe and reopened to the public.

Shylah Rodden is believed to have walked onto the track of the Rebel Coaster ride to retrieve her phone when she was struck by a moving carriage on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, who was working at the show, is believed to have been thrown into the air on impact and fallen 9m to the ground.

On Tuesday, the show organisers issued a statement saying WorkSafe had finalised its inspection report on the Rebel Coaster.

“Following the tragic accident at the Rebel Coaster ride on Sunday afternoon at the Melbourne Royal Show, WorkSafe has finalised an inspection report advising that the ride is safe and may be re-opened from today, Tuesday 27 September,” it read.

“The safety and well-being of our visitors to the Show continues to be our number one priority.

“Strict safety protocols are upheld in line with Victorian WorkSafe regulations. All rides on site have undergone stringent compliance inspections and have passed all the required safety documentation.”
