Sheldon Harnick, a Tony and Grammy Award-winning lyricist who collaborated with Jerry Bock to form one of the greatest musical theater songwriting teams in the 1950s and 1960s, has passed away.
Their works include “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Fiorello!” and “The Apple Tree,” among others. He was 99.
Harnick, who was well-known for his subtle, incisive humor and precise wordplay, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday in New York City from natural causes, according to his publicist Sean Katz.
Broadway performers offered their tributes online, with writer Cinco Paul of “Schmigadoon!” referring to him as “one of the all-time great musical theater lyricists” and actress Jackie Hoffman adding, “Like all brilliant persnickety lyricists he was a pain in the tuchus.”
