Morehead State University men’s basketball coach Sean Woods (born March 29, 1970) is a former American basketball player who now serves as the head coach of the Morehead State men’s basketball team. In his high school years, Woods attended Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, before going on to play collegiate basketball at Kentucky. As a Wildcat in 1992, he was a member of a senior-laden team known as the “Unforgettables,” which had arrived at Kentucky in 1988 and had remained there for the entire four-year period despite the NCAA placing the university’s basketball programme on probation for three years in 1989 for recruiting and academic violations. In 1989, the NCAA placed the university’s basketball programme on probation for three years for recruiting and academic violations. In addition, the NCAA banned the team from playing in post-season competition in 1990 and 1991, respectively. They were coached by Rick Pitino and featured fellow seniors Richie Farmer, Deron Feldhaus, and John Pelphrey, as well as a number of others. The squad shocked many when it received a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight that year. Forest Woods and the Kentucky Wildcats beat Old Dominion, Iowa State, and UMass on their way to the regional championship game. Wildcats played Duke at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, where they were looking to advance to the Final Four. The Wildcats had a 29–6 record before into the matchup. Woods cemented his legendary status in Kentucky lore by pouring in 21 points in the finals against Duke, with one of the most important being a 10-foot (3.0 m) floater over Christian Laettner that bounced off the backboard and dropped into the basket in overtime. Woods was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. With 2.1 seconds left on the clock, the Kentucky Wildcats took a 103–102 lead. The Unforgettables, on the other hand, would lose the game on Laettner’s following jumper with time running out. Following his graduation, Woods was signed to the Indiana Pacers’ preseason roster, but he did not make the club and was released. Afterwards, he operated a renowned basketball camp that helped future NBA players such as Tony Delk and Antoine Walker develop their skills (both of whom played at Kentucky). He previously worked as an assistant coach at High Point University before joining the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi staff as an assistant coach. Woods was inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Unforgettables, which is a group of former Kentucky athletes. Following the defeat to Duke, every Kentucky senior’s jersey (but not their numbers) was retired immediately after the game. With 482, Woods is presently ranked sixth all-time on Kentucky’s all-time career assist list.
He is married and the father of two young children. In 2006–07, TCU signed his son Martiese Morones, a high school point guard from Kentucky, to a collegiate basketball contract. Woods would begin working for TCU a short time after that. Woods took over as head coach of the Mississippi Valley State University men’s basketball team on June 24, 2008. Last season, the Delta Devils won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament but falling in the First Four round. Woods left the programme after one season in 2012. On May 14, 2012, Woods was named as the new head coach at Morehead State University, succeeding Donnie Tyndall, who had been appointed as the head coach of the University of Southern Mississippi. In 2012, Woods was banned for one game for pushing and assaulting his player DeAndre Jordan.
