Mason’s success caught the attention of WRAL-TV (CBS) in Raleigh, North Carolina. He became the station’s Documentary Producer in April 1997. He researched, wrote, and produced nene documentaries before adding his talents to the nightly news team as a reporter specializing in features.

Mason came to WRAL as the Tar Heel Traveler in 1997 and is also the winner of more than 100 journalism awards as well as the writer of several Tar Heel Traveler books. One of his best works is a one-hour documentary he produced on the D-Day invasion.
