Sarah Hughes born as Sarah Elizabeth Hughes is an American former competitive figure skater and lawyer. She was named to the Chevrolet/USFSA Scholastic Honors Team for her achievements in 2002 as a scholar-athlete. Hughes is the 2002 Olympic Champion and the 2001 World bronze medalist in ladies’ singles. In addition, Hughes was selected as the March of Dimes Sportswoman of the Year. She is also a spokesperson for Campbell’s Soup ‘Labels for Education’ program.

Hughes was born John Hughes a Canadian of Irish descent and was also one of the captains of the undefeated and untied NCAA champion 1969 to 1970 Cornell University ice hockey team. Hughes’ older brother Matt graduated from the police academy and is currently an NYPD Sergeant.

Moreover, Sarah is also the cousin of Gregg “Opie” Hughes, from the Opie and Anthony radio show. In addition, her older sister Rebecca Hughes was the editor of the newspaper at Harvard.

Hughes married Amit Mukherjee in the year 2016. The couple got married in a ceremony in Woodbury, New York has over 400 guests celebrate the big day.

Amit is a partner at venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates and was named to Forbes magazine’s 30 Under 30 list for the venture capital industry in 2016. They began dating in 2013 and Amit proposed to Hughes in March 2016 at the site of their first date in New York City.

Hughes began skating at the age of three. Robin Wagner who also choreographed for her from 1994 finally became her head coach in January 1998. In the 1997 to 1998 season, Sarah won the junior title at the 1998 U.S. Championships. She later completed on the ISU Junior Grand Prix the following season and won the silver medal at the 1998 to 1999 Junior Grand Prix Final.

She then took silver at the 1999 World Junior Championships held in November 1998. Hughes made her Grand Prix debut, winning the bronze medal at the 1999 Trophée Lalique in the 1999 to 2000 season. She also won the bronze medal at the 2000 U.S. Championships and was credited with a triple-salchow-triple-loop combination.

Moreover, Hughes placed 5th at the 2000 World Championships. She won three medals on the Grand Prix circuit and won the bronze medal at the 2000 to 2001 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in the 2001 to 2002 season.

Sarah Hughes Olympic Win

Hughes placed fourth in the short program after being penalized for underrotating her triple flip and lutz at the 2002 Olympics. She landed seven triple jumps, including a triple toe loop-triple loop and a triple salchow-triple loop combination in her long program. She went ahead to win the long program like the three contenders ahead of her all later made mistakes in their respective long programs.

According to figure skating rules at that time, is one placed fourth in the short program, but won the free skate, they could not automatically win the event. Retired figure skater Michelle Kwan was in first place after the short program and she would have to lose the free program to Hughes and one other skater as well. Furthermore, she won the free skate where Irina Slutskaya placed second in that portion, ahead of Kwan.

Hughes went ahead to win the gold medal at the age of 16 years and 295 days. She became the youngest figure skating Olympic champions. Hughes is also the only American woman to have won the Olympic title without ever having won either a World or U.S. senior national title.

She was honored with a parade in her hometown of Great Neck after her Olympic win. Senator Hillary Clinton spoke at the event and she declared it Sarah Hughes Day. She went ahead to receive the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the U.S.

However, she did not compete at the 2002 World Championships. Hughes won the silver medal at the 2003 U.S. Championships and placed sixth at the 2003 World Championships.
