He was one of three children and the second oldest of three sons born to Charlotte and Edward Schiff. His father is a real estate lawyer and his mother is a television and publishing executive.

However, his parents’ marriage came to an end and they divorced. His mother later got remarried to Clarence Benjamin Jones, Martin Luther King Jr.’s lawyer.
