Woodward’s voice work on the children’s television program Wide-Eye is what has made him most famous. He played Royal Flying Corps pilot Sergeant Alan Farmer in the 1970s BBC drama Wings, one of his first well-known performances.

After that, he portrayed affluent and eccentric Royal Air Force pilot Squadron Leader Rex in the 1988 film Piece of Cake.

In the 1990s, Woodward starred in the soap opera Families on Granada Television and as gamekeeper Walter Gillies in Yorkshire Television’s popular 1960s serial Heartbeat.

In the 2000s, Woodward played Scotland Yard’s Leonard “Nipper” Read in the ITV police drama Murder City and appeared in the 2008 ITV adaptation of Jake Arnott’s crime novel He Kills Coppers.

In 2008, he acted as a London mobster family in a special narrative for The Bill, costarring with his father Edward and son Sam. Additionally, Woodward played Robert McCall’s father in a flashback scene in an episode of the American TV show The Equalizer, where he costarred with his father. Interestingly, he was Sarah and Peter Woodward’s brother, actors.
