What do you say ?? What can you say ?
I’ve had several people ask me why I haven’t posted about Pete Mendillo but what do you say ? I don’t post about loss often and I don’t process loss by posting about it , that’s just me .
We were life long friends from the beginning , instant brothers , we loved , argued ,and hugged like brothers . Pete was like another son to my parents for many years , Pete spent a lot time at the Sudbury house and came to to my parents for advice many times . He loved all the Sudbury’s and we loved him .
We did open jams and random gigs together until Pete quit Survivor to come play with me full time after hearing my first record in the late 90s ? We recorded demos in his garage and at my place , studios etc until we finally recorded the second record at Alan’s house . It ending up winning another indie artist of the year award for the UK . We were very proud . We traveled the country several times over in a 15 passenger touring van , we did long hauls in busses , rvs , limos and airplanes .
We spent countless hours in airports with no sleep laughing at everything and nothing .
We slept on airport floors , in roach motels , luxury suites , to backstage dressing rooms where we used our luggage or a roll of gaffers tape as a pillow .
We would cuss each other out and then meet up for Mexican food , that was us.
Pete had my back when I fought and dealt with record labels, managers , agents , and promoters and it made me want to pull my hair out . He was always there to talk it out and give support .
We also played in Jimi’s version of Survivor together , roomed together on the road etc .
We had done a gig together recently and we had a blast . I guess what I’m saying is that we all have some great memories of Pete to carry with us , to smile about and that will get my family and me through this.
Pete will be laid to rest with his family in New York . Jeff Adams and I have been asked to help with a celebration of life for all Pete’s Memphis area friends and family and we will keep you posted . This is a huge loss for my family and for so many . Pete would love all of the fb posts and he would be humbled for sure 🙂 . Pete and I said our I love you’s earlier this week and I’m happy we did , be sure to say yours to your loved ones.

I’m at a huge loss for words, but I can finally type now that my eyes have stopped watering for the most part. Waking up to the news that a musician you had the highest respect for has unexpectedly passed is shocking enough, but when it’s a true friend and someone of the caliber of person like Pete Mendillo it’s truly devastating. Truly heartbreaking. Pete was a drummer’s drummer. He made it look easy. The best musicians always make it look easy. I only got to play with you a few times, but I can sum it up with the word “fun.” The way playing music should be. And whenever you would tell me I sounded great, I knew it was sincere and it always made me feel good. Now all that musician stuff aside, you were one of the best just to be around and talk to. One of the good ones as we say. And that’s so true. I’m gonna miss you Pete, hell, we are ALL gonna miss you. You made that drum throne and the world around you a little bit brighter. I’ll always remember our last words every time we saw each other…”Love ya Pete!” ….Love ya Ken!” My prayers to Carolyn, your family, your bandmates, your friends and all of us whose life you touched in some way. This one truly hurts. 💔
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased’s family and friends, who have been struggling with the loss of such an intelligent and compassionate individual.
