After stopping a shooter who opened fire at a downtown bank on Monday, a newly sworn-in Louisville police officer is now in serious condition.

When Nickolas Wilt’s department received the call that a shooter had started firing, he was on his fourth shift as a police officer.

The Monday after Easter, at 8:38 a.m. local time, downtown Louisville was crowded with early-morning commuters. According to interim Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel, Wilt and his field training officer Cory Galloway arrived to the scene in less than three minutes.

Wilt “did not hesitate,” she added. As the shooter turned his assault rifle in his direction, the man raced straight towards him. A 25-year-old bank employee is the suspect.

Wilt got hit in the head throughout the process though. He was one of the nine patients admitted to the hospital following the shooting, and following brain surgery, he is still under sedation and in a critical condition.

A group of rookie police officers from Wilt’s academy class, according to Mayor Craig Greenberg, visited him. On March 31, the 26-year-old received his diploma from the police school.

During a news conference, Gwinn-Villaroel stated, “I just swore him in.” His family was present to see him on his path to becoming a police officer.

Wilt held positions as a municipal firefighter, emergency dispatcher, and emergency medical technician before joining the police department. According to a statement from Baptist Health, he is still employed there on a “as-needed basis.”
