After a brief illness, Joann Barder, née Laffey, age 78, of River Forest passed away on Saturday, November 26, surrounded by her three children.
dearly departed Robert J. Barder’s spouse. loving mother to Robert Thomas, Mary Therese (Michael), and Julie Ann (Julene). Grandmother to James, the late Raymond, Naomi, David, Andrew, and Carina Barder, as well as Nora, Megan, and the late Erin Leahy, who was also her great-grandmother. Daughter of Myles and Julia Laffey, who passed away. the late George and Gertrude Barder’s daughter-in-law. Sister of William (Dr. Patricia) and Myles (Patricia) Laffey. Dedicated godmother, adored cousin, and dear friend to many. Sister-in-law to Thomas Barder and Louise (Roy Allen) Corzine.
Joann, who was born and reared on the South Side of Chicago, graduated from DePaul University with two master’s degrees in teaching and school administration after attending Visitation School. She first taught third grade at Ogden School before second grade at Visitation School. On May 2, 1970, she wed Bob Barder, her “Prince,” and committed her life to becoming a dedicated wife and mother. She started working at Willows Academy after her children had grown up, and over the course of 20 years, she held a variety of posts there, including President of the Board, Director of Parent Relations, College Counselor, Teacher, Dean of Students, and Assistant Head of School. For infusing all of her family ties with such love, warmth, and grace, JoAnn was greatly admired.
Friday, December 2, 2022, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cooney Funeral Home, 625 Busse Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068, will be open for visitation. The Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, 1850 N. Hermitage Avenue, Chicago, IL 60622, on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Road, Hillside, IL 60162, will be the location of the following burial. Donations to Willows Academy, 1015 Rose Ave., Des Plaines, IL 60016, may be made in lieu of flowers.
