Salma is a 16-year-old girl who used to live in Egypt with her mother and 2 younger brothers but now lives in the USA because of her condition.
Salma had an accident in a swimming pool in Egypt when she was five years old, she got trapped on the swimming pool suction valve. During this accident, her small intestine was sucked out meaning all her intestine was outside of her body, she passed out and she was rushed to the hospital, the doctor said she had only 2 weeks to live and that she needs an intestine transplant.
She spent 2 months in the hospital because of the transplant her family had to relocate to the USA. She was on the transplant list for good 18months before she had a transplant which failed 5 to 6 times after the transplant.
The doctors had to open her up and found out that she had an infection due to her body rejecting the transplant, her bladder was ruptured, her small and large intestine was removed, the infection spread so bad that the doctors couldn’t close her up again. She said it’s healing slowly but she needs new intestines (small and large), stomach, pancreas, and liver transplant and she needs about $3million dollars for the transplant because the infection damaged these organs in her body.
How does she eat? The doctor connected a little pipe at her upper back which is connected to a bag which is called TPN(Total primary nutrients ), this bag is filled up of all the nutrients her body needs which is always in her backpack for at least 20 hours a day.
Although she sometimes feels hungry, she tastes her mother’s food by chewing just to get the taste of her food and throws it away in the bin but never gets to swallow it because no stomach or intestine for it to go and digest.
She wishes to get the transplant and live a normal life like the rest of her friends.
