Mathew Bevan Cox (born July 2, 1969), better known by his stage name Matthew Cox and sometimes known as Matthew B. Cox and Matt Cox, is a convicted criminal and con artist in the United States. He was convicted of conspiracy and grand theft. As an aspiring novelist, Cox created an unpublished book titled The Associates, in which the main character travels the nation committing mortgage fraud in a manner similar to that of Cox’s own subsequent mortgage fraud spree.
As a result, Cox fabricated papers to give the appearance that he owned properties, and then illegally secured mortgages on those properties for amounts that were five to six times their true value. He amassed tens of millions of dollars in this manner; estimates place the total at between US$5 million and $25 million. He was sentenced to probation for mortgage fraud in 2002, which marked the beginning of Cox’s criminal career. He was subsequently dismissed from his mortgage broker job, which he had had with a company in the Tampa, Florida region. Following that conviction, he started a life as a committed criminal in central Florida, until leaving the region when his actions were uncovered by law enforcement.
In the following years, he continued his crime rampage throughout the southern United States, ultimately putting him on the Secret Service’s Most Wanted list. He was assisted by a number of female accomplices, some of whom are now in jail or have spent time in prison as a result of their involvement in his illegal mortgage activities. On November 16, 2006, Cox was taken into custody. His sentence was reduced to a maximum of 54 years on April 11, 2007, after entering a plea deal with the prosecution. He was sentenced to 26 years in jail on November 17, 2007. He was indicted on 42 charges and faced prison terms of up to 400 years.
