Chester Jermaine known by his stage name Lyfe Jennings is an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and instrumentalist who plays the guitar, bass, and piano which he integrates into his music.

Lyfe started his career in music performing with a band made up of himself, his brother and two cousins named The Dotsons. The band would later be separated and Jennings got into legal troubles leading to his music career coming to an end. He was prisoned at the age of 14.

He was released in 2002 after 10 years in prison. He decided to go back to music recording a four-song demo CD just two days after his release. He performed at the Apollo after a month. He impressed the crowd with his gritty falsetto and lyrical songwriting and the tune of five amateur-night victories in a row. Jennings sold about 1,000 copies of his four-song demo CD during his Apollo “residency.”He moved to New York to pursue a major label deal. He got a contract with Columbia Records and released his debut album titled Lyfe 268-192 in August 2004. One year later after its original release, the album was reissued with a bonus track “Hypothetically” was added featuring American Idol winner, Fantasia.

In August 2006, he released The Phoenix which is more hip-hop featuring Three 6 Mafia and Young Buck making guest appearances. He released Lyfe Change 2008 April, featuring of new artists as well as a verse from T.I.He got a new deal with Warner Bros. and began working on another album, titled Sooner or Later, which would be his last album as per his statement. It was released in August 2010 featuring guest artists like Warryn Campbell, Fabolous, Bryan-Michael Cox, Bobby Valentino, Ludacris, Anthony Hamilton, and Jazmine Sullivan.

Jennings returned to music in 2013 October with a song titled Lucid, released on the Mass Appeal label. The song peaked in the Top 10 of Billboard’s R&B chart. He recorded Tree of Lyfe in his home studio in Greenwood, Mississippi in June 2015. He described the album as his most personal work to date. Jennings was asked about his current musical mindset and this was his answer, “Everybody feels like they have to reinvent themselves. I don’t think you can reinvent the truth. It is what it is. I’m not focused on reinvention. I want to go deeper. This album reaffirms the reasons why people started loving this music in the first place.”

Jennings was arrested at the age of 14 due to the legal problems he had. He was prisoned for 10 years before he got out in 2002. This was after the band he had started had collapsed. In 2008 Jennings was sentenced for 3 years for kicking his baby mama and ex-fiance Joy Bounds’ door after they had an argument, firing shots in the street and leading the police on a 90 mph chase that ended with him crashing his 2005 Corvette.
