After a 4-year-old girl was shot and killed in Pittsburgh, police made an impassioned plea to parents tonight, asking them to monitor their children’s activities and social media in an effort to reduce gun violence in the city.
Family members of Kaari Thompson describe her as an energetic and outgoing child. Thursday night, she and her mother were walking down Lincoln Avenue when they were both shot and killed.
Assistant Chief Lavonnie Bickerstaff of the Pittsburgh Police Department said, “I am very touched by this tragic situation that occurred yesterday and this 4-year-old baby won’t be able to enjoy the holiday season like any other girl would.”
In light of Thompson’s passing, Pittsburgh Public Schools also released a statement, which read:
We are heartbroken to share the news of the death of Pittsburgh Lincoln Early Childhood student Kaari Thompson, who was shot and killed in the Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood on Monday. Kaari was a kind and generous young girl who brought joy to everyone she met. She particularly liked the classroom’s housekeeping area, where she could play at cooking for her classmates. She was a delight to have in class because of her intelligence and enthusiasm. During this time of sorrow, please know that you are in our prayers.
The neighbors who have shown up to the scene today have had enough.
We have to have a talk with our kids. We must engage today’s youth. Derek Scott, a local resident, said, “We need to talk to them and tell them to put the drugs and guns down.” In no way will this approach help us address the problems that exist in our society at large.
Authorities have not commented on a possible motive, but Channel 11 has learned that Kaari’s mother, who was also shot and is in critical condition, was out on bond pending trial for attempted homicide. As of last August, she is suspected of having shot and killed two Homewood teenagers.
Though they would not confirm whether or not the mother was a specific target, authorities urged parents to be vigilant in keeping tabs on their children’s online activities.
If you keep an eye on your kids, you might be able to save their life, or the life of a child you care about, advised Bickerstaff.
Police said they had received numerous tips in a briefing on Friday night, but they are still appealing to the public for assistance. Even though no arrests were mentioned, they did say that detectives are actively working to identify suspects and bring them off the streets.
