Judge Judy is an American court show arbitrator, author, television producer, media personality, a proponent of women’s emancipation, and former Manhattan family court prosecutor and judge. On October 21, 1942, Judith Susan Sheindlin was born.

Sheindlin was born in Brooklyn to German and Russian Jewish parents as Judith Susan Blum. She calls her dentist father Murray “the nicest thing since sliced bread.” Sheindlin calls office manager Ethel Sheindlin “a meat and potatoes kind of gal.”

Sheindlin earned a Bachelor of Arts in government from American University after attending James Madison High School in Brooklyn. She then studied at the New York Law School, from where she earned a Juris Doctor in 1965.

Sheindlin was employed as a corporate attorney by a cosmetics company in 1965 after passing the New York state bar exam. She left her job two years later since she had grown bored with it in order to raise her children Jamie and Adam.

She became aware of the position in the New York family court system in 1972 and applied. Sheindlin prosecuted cases involving juvenile criminals, domestic violence, and child abuse during his career as a lawyer.

Sheindlin gives Josh Getlin and his wife Heidi credit for her rise to stardom. Josh Getlin wrote on Sheindlin in a February 1993 Los Angeles Times story, describing her as a person committed to making sure that the legal system functions for the benefit of society.
