Joel Hicks Obituary, Woodrow Wilson High School football coach, VHSL Hall of Fame Member

On March 4, 2023, Joel Lee Hicks, 81, of Fairlawn (Pulaski County), died.

He was the son of the late Charles Hicks and Goldie Oyler Hicks and was born on April 14, 1941, in Richwood, West Virginia. His aunts Carolyn Heltzel and Mary Lou Borrelli also passed away before his parents.

Joel Hicks graduated from Richwood High School in 1959 and was an all-state performer in baseball, basketball, and football. He then won a scholarship to play football at West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor’s in physical education in 1964 before beginning a 38-year Hall of Fame coaching tenure.

Coach Hicks started his coaching career at Big Creek High School as the head football coach.

At Pulaski County High School, where he took the head football coaching position in 1979, Coach Hicks solidified his Hall of Fame career. In his first season, Coach Hicks had a 9-3 record, which included a 7-0 postseason victory over the top-ranked George Washington Eagles. Under Coach Hicks, Pulaski County High School football grew to be one of the best in the state of Virginia for the following 23 years. At Pulaski County, Coach Hicks amassed a record of 210-68, which included 15 District Titles, 6 Regional Championships, three State Runner-Up finishes, and a 1992 Division 6 Football State Championship.
