Jimmy (Jim) Dolphus Huffman, 86, of 217 River Ridge Road, Eden, North Carolina, passed away at the Gibson House of Hospice of Rockingham County on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.

On Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 2 p.m., a funeral ceremony will be place at Eden’s First Wesleyan Church, with burial at Roselawn Mausoleum to follow. Visitation will take place at First Wesleyan Church, 607 Church Street, from 1-2 p.m., an hour before the service.

Jim was born on October 19, 1936, to the late Edward Posey and Margaret Elizabeth Huffman in Marion, North Carolina. He served in the American Army and is a veteran of the military. He attended East Tennessee State University and Brevard College, where he played baseball and basketball, respectively.

After earning his degree, he relocated to Eden and started working at Fieldcrest Mills, where he eventually retired as director of purchasing. Jim proudly shared ownership of Huffman Medical, Inc. with his son Kevin during his retirement years.

Jim was a people person who devoted his life to serving others and loved his neighborhood. He donated his time and skills to charities like The Salvation Army, Help, Inc., Caregivers of Rockingham County, and the Y’s Men Club, frequently filling official positions.

He received the North Carolina Governor’s Award, a citation from the North Carolina General Assembly for his commitment to the American Red Cross, and the Eden Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of his numerous community contributions.

Jim was a frequent blood donor, giving over 53 gallons of blood in his lifetime, which at the time was the most of any person in Rockingham County.

Jim loved playing sports, and his love of tennis inspired him to take up pickleball in his latter years. His devotion with the sport gave him the moniker “Pickleball Guy,” and even at the age of 86, he was able to compete with players half his age. You always got a Butterfinger from the “Candyman,” as he was lovingly known to many, whether you won or lost. But the title of “Papa” to his four grandkids was the one he treasured the most.

Jim was also predeceased by his parents and siblings in addition to his wife, Peggy Jean Tucker Huffman. His grandchildren Katie Ormond, Tori Pierce and husband Devin, Jacob Ormond and wife Haley, and Kylie Huffman, as well as his special furry child, Lizzie, all reside in Eden. He is also survived by his son Kevin Huffman and wife Carla.
