The Barbados Rally Club (BRC) mourns the tragic loss of Jamal Kirby Brathwaite, an enduring figure in the world of motorsport. Jamal, affectionately known as “Kirby,” was not only an accomplished competitor but also served as a dedicated member of the BRC’s Committee of Management for over a decade. This remarkable individual’s life was cut short by a fatal road accident in the United States, leaving a void in the hearts of many who knew and admired him.
Neil Corbin, the Chairman of the BRC, expressed the profound impact of Jamal’s presence in the motorsport community. “The motorsport community has lost a great man,” Corbin said. Kirby Brathwaite’s achievements spanned various categories within the BRC, showcasing his extraordinary versatility as a racer.
He achieved significant milestones, claiming championships across all of the BRC’s disciplines. His accolades included the MudDogs Novice Driver Champion in 2004, Novice Navigator Champion in 2005, and a shared Autocross Champion title in 2010. His journey into motorsport began under the mentorship of the ‘Chicken Pen,’ an informal organization led by Norman Catwell, known for nurturing newcomers to the sport.
Jamal’s racing prowess extended to class championships in Modified 6 and M7, where he fearlessly piloted the Mitsubishi Colt and Honda Civic, respectively. He also celebrated class victories in Rally Barbados, leaving an indelible mark in the world of motorsport.
In addition to his racing achievements, Jamal Brathwaite’s commitment to motorsport extended to his role within the BRC. He had been an integral part of the club’s Committee of Management since 2011, serving as its secretary and, more recently, as the competition secretary.
