You can eat chicken on Fridays during Lent. Rules like this are only guidelines by the Church to help you finding a way to do penance for the sins and preparing yourself for a great event like Christmas, Easter, Etc. There is no hard and fast rules.
Is eating meat on Lenten Friday’s a sin? Only if you have determined and pledged that, as a gift to God, you will forgo eating meat for a season. Obviously, in scripture there is no mention of Lent nor is there is any prohibition against eating meat.
Chicken was being served for dinner. This was a problem, though, since it’s Lent and Catholics can’t eat meat on Fridays during Lent. In 1966 Pope Paul VI reorganized the Church’s practice of public penance in his “Apostolic Constitution on Penance” ( Poenitemini ).
1. The Catholic Church considers it a sin to eat meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and the Fridays during Lent. If a practicing Catholic were to knowingly eat meat on those days it is considered a mortal sin. There are exceptions, such as being sick or pregnant and there are regional exceptions such as in poorer countries.
