A motocross accident killed Georgia’s mayor, who assumed office in June.

On Saturday, a motocross accident killed a Georgia mayor who had just been in office for three months. Perry Bell, mayor of White in Bartow County, died of blunt force injuries to the chest, according to The Daily Tribune News of Cartersville.

Deputy Coroner Jonathan Sosebee of Murray County said Bell, 54, crashed and was hit by another rider at the Lazy River Motocross track in Dalton.

“It was an unavoidable accident,” stated Sosebee. “According to what I hear, he was on a jump and then crashed on top of another jump. There was another rider immediately behind him, and he couldn’t do anything because he couldn’t see him in time to avoid him.”

According to Sosebee, Bell was too badly injured to be evacuated by helicopter and died at a hospital in Chatsworth.

According to Sosebee, officials are investigating, but no criminal charges have been filed.

According to Sosebee, the other cyclist had minor injuries but was released from the hospital hours later.

After Bell’s death, White Mayor Pro Tem Gary Crisp will take over as mayor. Crisp told WSB-TV that another special election to replace Bell, who entered office in June, is likely.
