The mother of Illinois football coach Marilyn Bielema, Marilyn, has passed away, according to a press release from the school. The Illini announced that they would not be holding Bielema’s scheduled media appearance on Thursday due to his passing, however no official cause of death was revealed. The official cause of death was not disclosed.

The press statement states, “There will be no media availability today.” “Coach Bielema is dealing with a family crisis at the moment. His mother had passed away, and he found out early this morning. We ask that you spare his loved ones the unnecessary attention at this time.

In May, Bielema gave a speech in the Quad Cities, close to his childhood home in Prophetstown, Illinois. His mother and father, Marilyn and Arnold, showed up.

Bret Bielema told the Illini Inquirer, “Hopefully it will make folks proud.” When I’m in Illinois, I often stress that Champaign should be a symbol of Illinois by its actions. I hope that what I do brings honor to the Quad City area. In a sense, everything follows a similar pattern.

Former Iowa defensive lineman and native Illinoisan Bielema grew up in the state. The Hawkeyes gave him his first coaching job after he graduated as their linebackers coach in 1996.

Marilyn stated at May’s talk, “I’m proud of him for what he’s done, but I’m pleased he remembers where he’s from.” That’s crucial, you know.

Bielema got his start in coaching in 2006 as defensive coordinator for the Wisconsin Badgers after stints at Kansas State and Wisconsin. After spending a few years in the NFL as the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, he returned to Illinois in 2021.

My initial reaction was, ‘Oh my gosh!’ Marilyn stated of Bielema’s move to Illinois, “It was wonderful as far as he gets to visit his family more often and everybody.” We think highly of him. That he continues to show concern for others is crucial.

Even Bielema’s humble beginnings in a tiny village have served him well in his recruiting efforts.

Marilyn emphasized the significance of family by saying, “I think it’s really vital.” “He was part of a tight-knit group of pals that stayed abreast of one another’s lives and still do. In a more intimate and supportive community,… Big cities have many benefits, but I like living in a smaller community.

Illinois is having one of its best seasons in recent memory right now. The Illini have already defeated Big Ten West foes like Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska, and they are now in the thick of things.

Illinois’ 7-3 record is already tied for the most wins in a single season for each of the previous two years, and it’s the most wins in a single regular season for the Fighting Illini since 2007 under Ron Zook. This weekend, the Illini play a pivotal game against third-ranked Michigan and have an opportunity to make a statement.
