Tragic Loss of MTA Track Worker, Hilarion Joseph, in Manhattan Subway Accident

In a devastating incident just after midnight on Tuesday, a Manhattan MTA track worker lost his life after being hit and dragged by an MTA train south of the 34th Street-Herald Square station. Hilarion Joseph, 54, a member of a cleaning crew, was tragically caught and dragged beneath the wheels of a northbound D train passing on the express track.

Metropolitan Transit Authority Chair and CEO Janno Lieber expressed the organization’s deep condolences, stating, “Our folks were at the hospital last night with the worker’s family. Obviously, they are very much in our thoughts right now. It’s a difficult morning, most of all, for those of us close to our colleague.”

The accident occurred approximately 150 feet south of the 34th Street-Herald Square station, and despite immediate efforts, Hilarion Joseph succumbed to his injuries about an hour later at Bellevue Hospital.

In response to this tragic incident, the MTA has mandated an eight-hour special safety briefing on track safety for all track workers, effective Wednesday. Additionally, scheduled non-emergency transit work has been canceled for 24 hours as a mark of respect for Joseph’s untimely death.
