She is well-known for pressuring world leaders to take immediate action to combat climate change.
Thunberg started a worldwide movement by skipping school. Beginning in August 2018, she spent her days camped out in front of the Swedish Parliament, holding a sign that read, “School Strike for Climate,” in black letters on a white background. She has spoken to world leaders at the U.N. in the 16 months since, met with the Pope, argued with the U.S. president, and encouraged 4 million people to participate in the global climate strike on September 20, 2019, which was the largest climate protest in human history. Her name has been connected to everything from bike shares to bugs, and her visage has been honored in murals and Halloween costumes.
