Denise’s birthplace, like that of her parents and grandparents, was Chicago (“within the last century,” as she put it on the teacher’s website she made). Her family moved to Des Plaines when she was 8 years old. As adolescents attending Maine West High School in 1996, she met her future husband there. She attended Eastern Illinois University and studied elementary education with a focus on teaching students in grades 5-8, with a Spanish minor.
Denise began her teaching career in 2001 in Berwyn, Illinois, working with international students to improve their English language and literacy skills. Then, beginning in 2003, she taught sixth grade science, language arts, and reading at Bloomingdale, Illinois’s Westfield Middle School for a total of ten years.
According to an online post by Denise, she and her family “focused on my children and family while staying home or working at a local wildlife rehab” in the years following their move to Roscoe in 2013. She returned to teaching in 2015, first as a paraprofessional at Kinnikinnick and then as a replacement before landing a permanent position teaching fifth grade.
What Denise Said “The idea of being a teacher first entered my mind when I was five years old. I never wavered in my resolve or considered changing my opinion.” “I take easily 500-2000 photographs a month,” she said. Examples of her photography can be seen on her website. In another part of her letter, she stated, “Someday, I’d love to start my own wildlife rehabilitation facility and/or a farm.”
Donations to Hoo Haven Wildlife Rescue can be made in lieu of flowers. At the memorial service and funeral, there will be a collection box for donations.
Her wake will be held at the G.L. Hills Funeral Home on Friday, December 2, 2022, from 4-8 p.m., in Des Plaines, Illinois, where she was born and raised. The address is 745 Graceland Avenue, Des Plaines, Illinois 60016.
On Saturday, December 3, 2022, from 2 to 6 p.m., a memorial service will be conducted at Kinnikinnick Elementary School (5410 Pine Lane, Roscoe, IL 61073), where she and her family have lived since 2013. Due to a lack of available parking spaces, visitors may need to park across the street on Williams Street at Main Street Square, which is north of the school.
The public is welcome to attend both events. All invited guests are encouraged to wear shades of purple. (In her essay, “I have a soft spot for violet. A lot.”) Make sure to bring something special to show and tell your loved ones. The funeral will have greeting cards and the memorial service will have paper.
