George Segal Biography
George Segal is an American actor and musician born on February 13, 1934, in Great Neck, Long Island, New York, the U.S. He served in the military for a short while. Segal later made his appearance as a stage actor before being cast in his first powerful film role in The Young Doctors in 1961.
His role in Ship of Fools, 1965 and King Rat, 1965, marked the arrival of a major talent. In 1966, Segal followed it up with his Oscar-nominated performance in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? This film became a cultural phenomenon wrecking the MPDDA censorship code that had been in place since 1934.

George first became interested in acting when he saw Alan Ladd in This Gun for Hire, at the age of nine. Upon his father’s death in 1947, he moved to Manhattan with his mother. He graduated from George School in 1951 and proceeded to Haverford College. In 1955, graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in performing arts and drama.
He ventured into the acting industry when he got a job as an understudy in a Broadway production of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘The Iceman Cometh’. Segal appeared for Joseph Papp in Antony and Cleopatra and joined an improvisational group called The Premise. He was originally a stage actor and musician, appearing in several minor films in the early 1960s.
The best-known movie is Longest Day of 1962. He signed a Columbia Pictures contract in 1961 and had his film debut in The Young Doctors. He was loaned to Warner Bros where he played as the young faculty member, Nick, in the Mike Nichols’ classic adaptation of the Edward Albee play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? of 1967. His role in this film saw him nominated for an Oscar.
His other significant films include The Quiller Memorandum, 1966, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, 1967, No Way to Treat a Lady, 1968, The Owl and the Pussycat, 1970, The Bridge at Remagen, 1969, Loving, 1970, Born to Win, 1971, A Touch of Class, 1973, California Split, 1974, Fun with Dick and Jane, 1977 among others.
Segal’s notable television roles include the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me! 1997–2003, TV Land sitcom, Retired at 35, 2011–12, and currently appears on the 1980s-themed ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. Besides his acting career, George played with several jazz bands as he is an accomplished banjo player. In 1967, he released his debut LP called The Yama Yama Man.
