Elaine Paige OBE (born Elaine Jill Bickerstaff on March 5, 1948) is a British singer and actress who is best recognised for her work in musical theatre. Paige was born in Barnet, North London, and attended the Aida Foster stage school, making her professional debut on stage at the age of 16 in 1964. Paige made her West End début in the 1968 production of Hair, and after a variety of roles over the following decade, she was cast as Eva Perón in the original production of Evita in 1978, which brought her to the notice of the general public.

She received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Musical for this performance. She went on to play Grizabella in Cats, and her song “Memory,” from the musical, became a Top 10 smash. Paige and Barbara Dickson recorded “I Know Him So Well” from the musical Chess in 1985, which is still the best-selling single by a female duet. She subsequently starred in and co-produced the original theatrical production of Chess, followed by a leading part in Anything Goes. Paige made her Broadway debut in 1996, portraying Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, to great acclaim. She made her West End debut in The King and I from 2000 to 2001, and she returned six years later in The Drowsy Chaperone. Paige has also dabbled in television.

Paige has been dubbed the “First Lady of British Musical Theatre” for her talent and longevity, having been nominated for five Laurence Olivier Accolades and winning many other awards for her stage performances. She has recorded 22 solo albums, eight of which have been certified gold and four of which have been certified multi-platinum. Paige has also performed in concerts all around the globe and is included on seven cast CDs. Paige has presented her own BBC Radio 2 programme, Elaine Paige on Sunday, since 2004. In 2014, Paige will commemorate her 50th year in show business. To commemorate this milestone in her career, Paige announced a “Farewell” concert tour and a new career-spanning CD titled “The Ultimate Collection” on her official website.
