Donna Pitman Education

After she graduated from Independence Christian School, which is now closed, she made her way over to the Fort Osage School District. As a sixth-grader Donna attended Fort Osage Middle School. It was like two different worlds, Donna said. Graduating from Fort Osage High School in 1993, she did not have a hard decision about college at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

She attended the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1993 and graduated in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and minors in Spanish.

At MU, she received some of her best training and education to gain a foothold in broadcast journalism. Once wanting to be a cameraperson and not a reporter, Donna became a “one-woman show” shooting and editing her own footage. She said as a petite woman, she would have to stand with her feet braced apart just to accommodate the large camera equipment and battery pack slung around her waist.

Donna Pitman Parents, Family

Donna grew up in Independence as the only child, her father died when she was only a baby. She grew up with her mother. “We have a very unique relationship because it was just the two of us. We are really close. She is my mom, my sister and, my best friend” she said. She has no siblings.

Interested as a child, Donna knew she wanted to do something in journalism, whether producing, becoming a photographer, or reporting. However, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, “media centers” and broadcast studios within the school setting were rare.

Donna Pitman Husband, Married

Donna is married to Cody. The couple has not yet disclosed their wedding date. Together they are blessed with a son, Gabriel born (earlier 2014) who was diagnosed with a rare disorder – Pompe Disease. The family resides in Kansas City.

Donna Pitman Baby

Donna is fighting for awareness after her son was diagnosed with a rare disorder – Pompe Disease. For her family, every three months means another visit to Children’s Mercy Hospital, and still another moment to wonder what’s next for her 20-month-old son. Looking at precious Gabriel, you’d never know something was wrong.

Days after Donna’s son Gabriel was born, he was diagnosed with a form of Pompe Disease. Gabriel has late-onset Pompe a life-threatening condition. The child lacks a certain enzyme that breaks down sugar or glycogen in his muscles. Over time it will build – suffocating his muscles. That’s why every three months, Donna heads to Children’s Mercy for another blood test. Doctors keep looking for signs that Pompe is advancing in Gabriel’s system. If it is, an aggressive, cumbersome, and expensive treatment comes next.

Enzyme replacement therapy replaces the bad enzymes in their son’s body. And it’s not a cure. However, treatment won’t fix any muscle damage that’s already been done.

Gabriel is one of only 12 people in the world with the same genetic mutation. And it is why the family has traveled to Duke University for help.  Duke is a leader in Pompe’s research. Aside from a cure, Donna and her family want to see more screenings for Pompe at birth.

Missouri is one of only eight states and the District of Columbia to do that, which means nobody knows how many cases of Pompe are truly out there. Kansas is one of the states that doesn’t screen for the disease.
