During the 1984 NFL Draft, Rivera was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round. The Bears’ defense was among the best defensive groupings of all time during the period he spent playing in Chicago.
As a result, he was forced to postpone his debut for 44 games. According to the Chicago Tribune, Rivera was the NFC Defensive Player of the Week and also led the team in tackles during that start.
