As of Season 15, Episode 11, Olivia is the last remaining original character from the first season of Law and Order: SVU . Benson became a detective with SVU in May 1998 ( SVU: ” Stalked “). Benson and Stabler were partners for 13 years (not 12, as commonly referred to: SVU: ” Swing “).
In Dick Wolf’s Law and Order franchise, the offenses perpetrated in Law and Order: SVU are considered especially heinous. In that series’ cast, the dedicated actors who played the members of this elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit have been known to leave the show from time to time.
But while Olivia is synonymous with the show today, many diehard fans will recall that back in Season 8, Detective Benson was so conspicuously missing from episodes that fans began to wonder whether actress Mariska Hargitay had quietly left the show entirely. So, why did Mariska Hargitay leave SVU in Season 8, only to return a few episodes later?
Benson is the only main character in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit whose parents and siblings are all deceased. Alongside that, she is the only character in the series who has lost a parent and a sibling during their time on the series, excluding Peter Stone, Alexandra Cabot and Elliot Stabler.
Why did Mariska Hargitay leave ‘SVU’ in Season 8?
When we first met her on the premiere of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Mariska Hargitay was Detective Olivia Benson, a passionate Special Victims detective with a personal connection to the heinous cases she was tasked with solving. Today, Olivia is the longest-running female character in any primetime series, and fans have watched as she has grown from Detective to Lieutenant to Captain.
With new opportunities like directing and producing episodes, Mariska felt like she was growing with the show and credits these chances to try new things as the reason she felt “challenged and inspired and excited,” to remain with SVU .
Last year, Mariska revealed that after her co-star Christopher Meloni left the show after 12 seasons as Detective Elliot Stabler, she also struggled with whether she still felt a commitment to the show. “I did a lot of soul-searching of whether I wanted to go on,” she said. “I was on my way to being at peace to be done.”
But once her belly was no longer small enough to hide, the writers decided to send Olivia “away on assignment” while the actress took a much-needed maternity break from the show. Mariska even shared the news on her own personal blog, assuring fans that “the writers are working on some really great story lines, and there will be a special guest star filling in.”
How long will Mariska stay on SVU?
Mariska’s told the show’s current showrunner, Michael Chernuchin, that if he keeps up the quality writing, she would stay on for 25 years. NBC is equally committed to Olivia and the show, saying that they want to continue to have SVU on air as long as Mariska stays on.

Who is Benson in SVU?
Benson is the only main character in SVU who has dated a fellow member of the Special Victims Unit, that being Brian Cassidy. Benson is the only main character in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit whose parents and siblings are all deceased.
As of Amaro’s One-Eighty, Benson is the last remaining main character from the first season of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. However, Cragen, Munch, and Stabler have made guest appearances.
The episode closes with Benson weeping on the courthouse stairs and, four months later, Lewis being wheeled away on a stretcher. In “ Beast’s Obsession “, Lewis uses the distraction caused by his (self-induced) cardiac incident to escape from prison.
