80-Year-Old Woman Dies in Kearney House Fire
Tragedy struck early Thursday morning when an 80-year-old woman lost her life in a house fire in Kearney, Nebraska. Diana Hill was found outside her home on West 20th Street, receiving CPR from a family member. Emergency crews rushed her to Good Samaritan Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and passed away later that day.
Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, Kearney Police Department, and CHI Health Good Samaritan ambulance responded to the call at 4:17 a.m. Firefighters and police officers arrived to find that the fire had been largely contained to one room of the home. Early investigations suggest that the fire was caused by a cigarette lit in close proximity to an oxygen delivery system prescribed for Hill’s medical use.
Investigations into the cause of the fire continue, with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office and Kearney Volunteer Fire Department collaborating on the case. Kearney Police Department is also assisting with the investigation as needed. While foul play is not suspected, officials are still seeking to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Speaking on behalf of the Kearney Police Department and the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Bryan D. Waugh expressed condolences for Hill’s family, friends, and neighbors. He also thanked CHI Good Sam EMS and the Nebraska Fire Marshal’s Office for their assistance in responding to the fire.
Tragic events like these serve as a reminder of the importance of fire safety. While smoking is a leading cause of residential fires, it is essential to take precautions when using medical oxygen delivery systems. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that individuals using oxygen in their homes avoid smoking and keep flames and heat sources away from the oxygen equipment.
Smoke detectors are also critical for early detection of fires, allowing for prompt evacuation and response. The Kearney Fire Department provides free smoke detectors and installation for residents in their jurisdiction. Residents can contact the department for more information.
