Denis Shapovalov rose to prominence when, at the age of 17, he defeated Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro at the Canadian Open. He made the semi-finals there and has since played three more ATP Masters semi-finals.
Shapovalov was a prolific player even as a youngster. He was the World No. 2 in the junior category and won the Wimbledon Singles title in 2016.
In addition, he and his partner, Felix Auger-Aliassime, won the US Open doubles title in 2015.

Denis began playing tennis at the age of five and was initially coached by his mother Tessa. Viktor Shapovalov who happens to be his father is a Russian. While Tessa Shapovalov, his mother, is a Ukrainian Jew.

Apparently, Denis’s parents had only two kids himself and Evgeniy. Interestingly, Shapovalov’s mother has a bit of history with tennis. When the Soviet Union collapsed, she moved to Israel with his father and later became a tennis coach there. Tennis is clearly in Denis’ blood.
