Demario Kirkland Dies After Being Hit By a Car, What Happened?

Birmingham police say a child was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday afternoon.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the incident happened at about 12:15 p.m. in the 3200 block of Jefferson Avenue.
Police did not release the name of the child. But he was identified by Oxmoor Valley Elementary School as one of its students.
“It breaks our heart to announce that 5th grade student, Demario Kirkland was hit by a car and sadly lost his life today. Please pray for his family and our school family. Counselors will be on site tomorrow to assist students and staff during this difficult time,” the school stated on its Facebook page.
Birmingham School Board member Walt Wilson also posted on his Facebook page. “Asking for your prayers for the family of Damario Kirkland, a 10 year old 5th grader at Oxmoor Valley Elementary. …. Please keep his family, students and faculty in your prayers as they return to school to tomorrow,” he wrote.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene.
Police are investigating the incident.
