Leisure’s acting career started when he was still studying drama at Grossmont College and San Diego State University. Following graduation, he worked for two seasons in the professional theater production of Feiffer’s “The Trial of the Catonsville 9” at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, and also performed in “The Boys in the Band,” “Pal Joey” and “Lenny.”
After his graduation from the University, Leisure moved to Los Angeles and began pursuing acting jobs for 6 years before landing a minor role in Airplane in 1980 as a Hare Krishna which ironically starred his roomie. After a period of hardship—where he lived in his car, he found work as a commercial pitchman, including a series of commercials for Bell Atlantic. Della Femina Travisano & Partners cast him as Joe Isuzu because they believe he could “lie like a pro”.
Actually, the character made over-the-top claims and obvious lies about Isuzu cars in a series of commercials throughout the 1980s—his Joe Isuzu character was again brought in 1999, and advanced to continue through 2001. The character’s popularity led to a co-starring role as Charley Dietz on the TV series Empty Nest.
