Phillips formed the trio Wilson Phillips with her childhood friends Carnie and Wendy Wilson in late 1980. In 1990 the group released their self-titled debut album. The album would go on to sell eight million copies. In 1992 the group released its second album, Shadows and Light, which was a commercial disappointment, despite being certified platinum. Chynna after that project, she left the group, citing exhaustion.
Chynna released her debut solo album, Naked and Sacred in 1995, but failed to recapture the success she found with Wilson Phillips. Wilson Phillips reunited to record their third album, California in 2004, which featured cover tunes from West Coast singers from the 1960s/70s.
