The only drinks you are not allowed to bring on the bus are alcoholic beverages. If you are caught consuming alcohol on the bus you can be kicked off. I always take a water bottle with me on Greyhound because it’s easy to get thirsty between stops and there is no available water on the bus.
A few dos and don’ts for riding Greyhound. There’s no smoking allowed on the bus (it’s against federal law). But don’t worry, our buses stop about every two hours so you can have a smoke outside. Please don’t take photos, video or make audio recordings of Greyhound staff, equipment or procedures
Please don’t take photos, video or make audio recordings of Greyhound staff, equipment or procedures (most of us haven’t been to acting school and just want to do our jobs). Absolutely no alcohol, drugs or weapons anywhere on the bus (including in your under the bus baggage).
The Greyhound bus does make food stops every few hours so you’ll be able to get something to eat and use the bathroom on a regular basis. Here’s a video I made that lists some additional tips you can use when taking long 20+ hour Greyhound bus trips.
Can you file a complaint against Greyhound?
You can read our discrimination policy for more information. ( English Title VI Program (opens in a new tab) / Spanish Title VI Program (opens in a new tab)) You may file a complaint by completing the Title VI Complaint form (opens in a new tab) .

I enjoy taking long Greyhound trips because I like looking out the windows and seeing the scenery. But if you are a person that gets bored easily you probably will want to take something with you to do.
Sometimes a 20 hour trip is really 14 hours of travel and 6 hours of sitting at Greyhound bus stations waiting for buses.
Then they need to switch bus drivers every 4–5 hundred miles. It can take upwards of two hours to transfer ( and it did) to another bus everytime they switch bus drivers.
Absolutely, in fact within the industry they are not even referred to as ‘buses,’ but motor coaches. The differences become apparent within seconds of stepping aboard. Greyhound is now using a fleet of coaches built by Prevost Car, widely considered to be the gold standard in the coachbuilders art.
Despite the fact that it’s not the standard, there are a couple of bus stations that work like carriers, in that you load up by the number on the ticket. If so for the station you’re withdrawing from, the previous you buy your ticket, the lower your loading up number and cost.
