Bruce David Grobbelaar (born October 6, 1957) is a goalkeepers coach with the Ottawa Fury FC of the North American Soccer League, where he is currently based. After more than two decades in the professional game, Grobbelaar has represented Zimbabwe at the international level and for a number of teams, including the English club Liverpool, throughout his distinguished playing career. His gymnastic-like physical ability, unflappable confidence, and quirky and flamboyant style of play are what he is known for the most. Grobbelaar was born in South Africa, but grew up in the neighbouring country of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) (today Zimbabwe). Having previously played for numerous Rhodesian and South African teams as well as serving in the Rhodesian Army, he was drafted into the North American Soccer League in 1979 and signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. His performances for Crewe Alexandra during the 1979–80 season caught the attention of Liverpool, and he eventually signed for the Merseyside club in the summer of 1981. Over the following 13 years, he made 628 appearances for Liverpool, including 440 in the Premier League. During his tenure with the club, he won the League title six times, as well as three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the 1983–84 European Cup, among other honours. Grobbalaar left Liverpool for Southampton in 1994, then moved to Plymouth Argyle two years later. After that, he played for a variety of English lower-league clubs, never for more than a few games at a time. Grobbalaar retired from football in 2006. Grobbalaar made a number of appearances for Zimbabwe during the later half of his club career, most notably under coach Reinhard Fabisch. In 1998, he made his last appearance for Zimbabwe.
