How Did Josephine Melville Die?

Josephine Melville, who had just finished starring in a production of Nine Night at the Nottingham Playhouse, was found dead in her dressing room, according to the BBC. The venue’s website claims that “first aiders from Nottingham Playhouse and a medically qualified member of the Nine Night audience” rushed to help Josephine. The site goes on to add that despite the rapid response of the paramedics, the woman tragically died at the spot.

Due to Josephine’s tragic death, the Nottingham Playhouse abruptly canceled the rest of the run of Nine Night.

In a statement, Nottingham Playhouse CEO Stephanie Sirr said:

“Please accept our deepest sympathies and deepest sorrow on the loss of Jo. We would want to thank everyone at the Nottingham Playhouse who helped us through a tragic and trying evening, especially the cast and crew of Nine Night.”

Josephine Melville was making positive contributions both in and out of the spotlight.

Josephine Melville co-founded the “all-women group [that] conceived and produced work with an African Caribbean perspective” (BiBi Crew) in 1991 alongside Joanne Campbell, Judith Jacob, Janet Kay, Suzette Llewellyn, Beverley Michaels, and Suzanne Packer. To our knowledge, they were the first all-Black female comedy group.

In a 1992 BBC profile of the BiBi Crew, Josephine said that “BiBi means lady in Swahili.” The purpose of bringing in The Bibi Crew was to give it “street cred.”

After realizing their shared experiences were universal despite their geographical separation, the three Black women chose to express their shared perspective on being Black in the world through a comedic and sketch-based lens.

Josephine also founded and presided over the South Essex African Caribbean Association outside of the arts. While working there, she was able to put her “combined skills and expertise to use in developing projects and community events that help to reduce prejudice and strengthen community ties among South Essex’s increasingly diverse population.”

All of us in this community are grieving for her and her loved ones. Her absence will be felt both on and offstage. Just what a blessing she turned out to be.
